Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is came out on Netflix on September 13, 2022 and was lauded by both critics and fans alike. The 10-episode show is a prequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and takes place a year before the game. Since the show was so well-received, naturally, fans wanted another season. However, CD Projekt Red‘s Japan country manager Satoru Honma has said that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone story and there will be no other instalments to the anime.
Speaking to Famitsu (via VGC), Honma shot down any possibilities of an Edgerunners season 2: “I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback. However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’.
“Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.”
Cybrepunk: Edgerunners was animated by Studio Trigger under the supervision of CD Projekt. The anime is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, who is one of the co-founders of the animation studio. He has worked on iconic shows such as Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, and Promare before.
awarded the anime a score of 9/10, writing, “Cyberpunk Edgerunners doesn’t overtake Cyberpunk 2077 so much as it expands upon it. But for the best version of Night City this side of the 21st century, consider diving into Studio Trigger’s madcap vision of the famous tabletop RPG. It’s a wild ride, but worth every blistering second, choom.”
