Death Stranding Is Getting a Live-Action Film Adaptation

Death Stranding 2 Officially Announced at The Game Awards 2022; All You Need to Know

Death Stranding is getting a live-action film adaptation. Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions and Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios will develop the film based on the popular video game. Lebovici was the executive producer for the 2022 horror film, Barbarian.

The film is fully financed by Hammerstone and will be produced by Kojima and Lebovici, Deadline reports. Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar will serve as executive producers.

As for what the film will be about exactly, the outlet reports that it will “introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe.” No further information is available on the film at this time of publication, as details about the writer and director of the film is under wraps.

The film is said to be “now on the fast track, with development underway.”

This comes after Kojima Productions opened a new division in 2021 based in Los Angeles dedicated to films, TV, and music.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing DEATH STRANDING to the big screen.”

“We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,” added Lebovici. “Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic “Hideo Kojima” production.”

At the Game Awards 2022, Kojima unveiled the sequel to his Death Stranding video game. After showing the trailer, Kojima appeared on stage and revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the narrative of the game. This led him to “re-write the whole thing from scratch.”

The game was referred to as DS2 in the trailer, which is a working title. It is not yet clear when the game will come out.
