NGO Prahar Thanks Indian Government For BGMI Ban

The Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) was banned under section 69A of the IT Act by the Indian government. The battle royale game was initially removed from Google Play Store and Apple App Store following the government’s directive on Thursday evening. While the entire Indian gaming community is shocked by BGMI’s sudden ban, an Assam-based non-profit organization Prahar has welcomed this move by the Government of India. Abhay Mishra, the NGO’s president said that they are grateful to the Government of India for taking this step.

Mishra stated that they have been urging the government to ban the game since February 2022, Prahar believes that BGMI and the banned PUBG Mobile are the same entities.

“In the so-called new avatar, the BGMI was no different from erstwhile PUBG with Tencent still controlling it in the background. We are grateful to the Government of India for taking this step in the interest of security and sovereignty of India”, said Abhay Mishra.

In February 2022, NGO Prahar had written a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block the Chinese mobile app Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) under section 69A of the IT act. The NGO mentioned that the game poses a security threat to the sovereignty and integrity of India. Later, Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) extended its support to the NGO and said that the government should thoroughly investigate the issue.

In March 2022, the NGO also wrote a letter to Tencent Holdings founder Pony Ma posing some questions related to Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI).

The Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) ban is a major setback for the teams like Soul and 7Sea Esports who were preparing to represent the country in the upcoming PUBG Mobile World Invitational tournament (PMWI). Team Soul earned the PMWI main event slot by winning the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series 2022 (BMPS), while 7Sea Esports got the ticket to the PMWI After-party Showdown by becoming the champions of the first official BGMI LAN tournament, BGMI Showdown 2022.

However, the Krafton India CEO’s recent statement indicated that BGMI has been temporarily suspended from the Indian Play Store and App Store. He said that the company is working closely with the concerned authorities to bring back the game. It would be interesting to see whether the Indian teams get a chance to participate in the PUBG Mobile World Invitational 2022 (PMWI), or not.
