The Last of Us is HBO’s upcoming show that is long-awaited by fans, as it’s expected to be one of the biggest live-action adaptations based on a video game. While it was confirmed that the show will come out in 2023, a premiere date mentioned on HBO Max’s store page for the show suggests that it will come out on January 15, 2023.
Fans have spotted that the description for the sneak peek video says the following: “A preview of the post-apocalyptic drama series based on the critically acclaimed video game. Premieres Jan. 15.” Take this with a grain of salt, however, as this hasn’t been officially confirmed.

The show stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who play Joel and Ellie, respectively. The show follows their lives as they go on a journey across America after the country is plagued by a zombie virus which decimates humanity. The game came out in 2013 and received critical acclaim not only for its gameplay aspects but also for the narrative, bleak visuals, and characters – particularly the depiction of female characters. The show is also expected to feature this same inhospitable and dreary vibe, judging by the trailer.
The Last of Us also stars Gabriel Luna as Joel’s younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, and Anna Torv as Tess. The series is touted as the largest television production in Canadian history, as it was filmed in Alberta. The first season will consist of ten episodes, with composer Gustavo Santaolalla reprising his role as the composer for the series after working on both games.
