Venom 3 Sets Kelly Marcel as Director

After writing the screenplay for both Venom and its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Kelly Marcel is stepping up to the director role for the third film based on the Marvel anti-hero.

Deadline reports that sources close to the film’s production have confirmed Marcel is set to direct the movie. She will also serve as producer alongside Tom Hardy, who plays the main character, Eddie Brock, and the titular symbiote.

Sources say Hardy and Marcel have “always been on the same page” when it came to mapping out the story of Eddie and Venom, and agreed on the direction for the final chapter of the trilogy. Hardy seemingly confirmed the script for the third movie was completed back in June of this year.

Marcel will be the third director in three Venom movies. The first film was directed by Ruben Fleischer who went on to direct the Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland. The sequel, Let There Be Carnage, was directed by Andy Serkis, best known for his motion-capture roles in The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes.

The first Venom movie was released in 2018 and starred Hardy as Eddie and Venom as the two learned to live with their coexistence. The 2021 sequel centered around villains Cletus Kasady and Carnage, who shared Cletus’ body in a similar manner to Eddie and Venom, though they had less heroic aspirations.

The movie ended with Eddie and Venom being pulled into the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity in a tease for an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, though they only showed up in the mid-credits scene.

The Venom movies are part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe, which was tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through No Way Home’s introduction of the multiverse. Morbius, which starred Jared Leto and launched in theaters earlier this year, also further cemented the universes’ connectivity by including the MCU version of Vulture.
