HBO’s critically acclaimed sci-fi drama Westworld was recently cancelled by the network following the end of the fourth season.
Fans of the series were distraught over the sudden cancellation, as the creators had revealed their vision of completing the story of Westworld in a fifth and final season. However, with the series cancelled by HBO, it seems like showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy won’t be able to wrap up the plot of the show.
Once news broke out about the cancellation, fans took to Twitter and other social media platforms with an attempt to save Westworld from being cancelled. Fans have now begun a push for HBO to overturn its decisions, with online petitions demanding the network to bring back Westworld.
Over the course of the four seasons, Westworld garnered rave reviews from critics, as it built a cult following. The show also won 9 Primetime Emmy Awards from 54 nominations, which makes it one of the most successful sci-fi shows of the last decade.
While the first two seasons received great responses, the show saw a major downfall in ratings and viewership with Season 3 & 4. Additionally, it doesn’t help that Warner Bros. Discovery is in the midst of cutting down costs, which has led to cancellation of several projects like the Batgirl film.
With no return in sight for Westworld, it remains to be seen if any other network or streaming platform might pick up the show somewhere down the line. However, for now, it seems like fans will have to suffice with the rather vague ending of Season 4.
