Willow Disney+ Stars Amar Chadha-Patel and Erin Kellyman Talk About Their Experience Working on the Series and More

33 years after its release, Warwick Davis’ Willow returns in a new Disney+ series. Alongside returning characters like Joanne Whalley’s Queen Sorsha, the show features several new characters, who undertake another adventure just like the original.

The adventure sees Willow paired up with characters like swordsman Boorman and knight-in-training Jade. Prior to the show’s release today, we caught up with the actors behind the characters Boorman and Jade in Amar Chadha-Patel and Erin Kellyman respectively. During the conversation, we spoke about their experience working on this fantasy series.

I wanted to ask whether both of you were familiar with Willow while growing up, or is that something you watched as an adult?

Amar: I was alive when Willow was released, which is depressing. So, I watched it when I was about seven or eight at a cousin’s house, and it had a big impact. And I remember that as my childhood. It was escapism and fantasy, and then I didn’t watch it for a long time until the process started for this job and then rediscovered a love for it.

Jade: I didn’t watch it till I was an adult. I hadn’t heard of it before the audition process.

Amar: We all watched it together as a cast. It was such a gratifying moment to do it together.

What’s the one element of the film that you were quite excited to see in the series as well? It could be the returning characters, the magic, or even just the lore itself.

Jade: It was quite interesting because I watched it when I was auditioning, and then again when we just started filming. And it was very weird to see Warwick at 17 and then go to set and be like, oh, that’s weird.

Amar: He’s older and cooler. It reminded me of the tone of the movies that we used to have in the 90s, especially that escapism. And I was really excited to bring that back into this whole world of fantasy TV because that was so clear from the scripts. It leapt off the page how self-aware the film was.

Just like the original, the characters in this series are going on a quest as well. What does the journey mean for both of your characters?

Jade: I don’t think Jade realizes the impact that the journey has on her. I think when you first meet her, she comes from two very different worlds, but she is quite set on what she wants to do with her life. She’s been conditioned to be this Knight and that’s what she actually wants to do, and that’s all she thinks she can do. I think this journey changes that, and she realizes there’s actually more options for her.

Amar: Quests are not a new thing to Boorman. He’s all about adventures in quests, but I think he’s used to doing them on his own. So being tied to this group of motley crew friends well, it becomes a quest of self-discovery.

For people who haven’t seen the trailers and the other footage from the series so far, if you had to describe your characters in three words, what would it be?

Amar: Tall, sword, emotionally repressed if you can make that one word.

Jade: I’d say brave, trustworthy and dependable, and also just shorter than Boorman. You could just put that into one word.

Willow has a fantasy setting. What’s the worst part of being in such an environment? Is it horse riding or just heavy clothes? Or is it something else?

Amar: Rain, supernatural rain.

Jade: Fake rain is the worst. Fake rain turned Ellie Bamber’s hair green.

Amar: The thing about real rain is it doesn’t really show up on camera because the droplets are too small. With film rain, the droplets are big, and those droplets hurt and are big and trying to.

Jade: And trying to talk through the rain.

Amar: There’s lots of scenes of all of us going *screams*. Just loads of ADR because it’s impossible to.

If you had to pick one actor that you enjoyed interacting with the most, and you can’t choose each other, who would it be?

Amar: That’s tough. I mean, I don’t want to make anyone feel less valued. We all got on really well. But I had some really interesting scenes with Ruby Cruz (Princess Kit) in the first couple of episodes because I have information that she wants. There was so much under the surface tension and sparkly atmosphere between us when we were having these discussions. And we don’t really have much of a reason to talk to each other.

I loved doing that with Ruby, and they were the simplest scenes as well. Sometimes it was just one camera walking while were holding horses, and it was just acting, so it wasn’t like running around with swords. It was really nice to get those emotions out.

Jade: I don’t know if I could pick a favorite. We did a lot together. But I think I didn’t work with Dempsey Bryk (Prince Airk) a lot at all. Our characters grew up together. They have obviously a very deep relationship. But we literally don’t talk in the show.
