Joe Blackburn, the longtime game director for Destiny 2, has officially stated in a new Twitter thread that they are taking on “a new adventure outside the walls of Bungie”.
Blackburn added that “as we hit End-to-End next month, Tyson Green will take the reins as D2 Game Director”.
Fans will likely recognize Tyson Green for their work on the Halo series. Blackburn mentions that Green also contributed to Myth 2, Bungie’s real-time tactics game from the late 90’s.
Both colleagues and fans instantly showed extensive support for Green in the new leadership role.
Since they have been a Bungie staple for so long, fans should expect little to change. Fans expect Green to continue to innovate and offer as much passion as Blackburn.
This unexpected shakeup comes just ahead of Destiny 2’s anticipated expansion The Final Shape.
The update will close a major chapter in Destiny 2’s ongoing narrative. However, back in November, The Final Shape was delayed until June.
Bungie cited that the team is “taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision”.
There was an emphasis on adding even more content. Just a couple of weeks ago, Bungie announced that Destiny 2 is finally adding a character customization feature.
Studios generally delay in order to polish up technical issues. A smooth launch would certainly be ideal after fans invested so many years in the story. So, fans have been patient and understanding.
In the meantime, Bungie also worked on a Fireteam Finder. Bungie ran a stress test for the feature in November, and released a Beta in December.
In Blackburn’s new thread, they stated that The Final Shape will soon get “multiple days of consecutive internal playtesting”.
