A new competitive shooter is in development by former Riot, Blizzard, Naughty Dog, Epic, Respawn, Ubisoft, and Raven developers currently named ‘Spectre’ and the developers hope it could be the next big thing in the competitive market.
The game is developed by a new studio called Mountaintop Studios which was founded in 2020 by Nate Mitchell, a co-founder of Oculus. Earlier this year, Mountaintop Studios teased its game online and said it’s developing a game with “10,000 hours of depth” which is inspired by anime, manga, and comics.
In 2021, the studio raised $30 million in round A funding for its player-vs-player games.
Flizzyy has learned that Spectre is a 3v3 competitive shooter, but with a difference. Mountaintop calls this new feature ‘Duality’, which allows the player to control two bodies in the game.
The second body is called a Spectre, with the player able to throw down a spawn marker where you’ll take control of it when needed. After the initial swap into the Spectre, the player then takes control between characters where they left off. The end result creates a high-skill gap game, where players need to learn the maps and angles of two characters rather than one, which creates never-ending moments.
Spectre is currently undergoing its 3rd alpha playtest, with Flizzyy understanding that the feedback of the game has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite the gameplay loop being pretty identical to other round-based competitive shooters like CS:GO and Valorant, the Duality mechanic sets it apart in an interesting way. Details on Mountaintop’s ambitions for the game going into esports are currently unclear, but from the gameplay we’ve seen, we’re pretty confident it’s going to establish in the scene.
The game features eight individual characters with unique abilities, so if you’re a fan of Valorant, I think you’ll enjoy Spectre.
Playtests for the game are currently on the PC and it’s unclear if the game will be coming to consoles.
