Last night, the BAFTA Games Awards took place in London, and as the 20th anniversary of the ceremony, all eyes were on the nominees stepping up to the plate. It was a star-studded, black-tie event that recognised the achievements of some of the best games to emerge in recent months, but some projects shone brighter than others. It was clear it would be this way from the start, but Baldur’s Gate 3 showed up in force, sweeping up a whopping five awards out of eighteen.
Baldur’s Gate 3 on Top
It was recently revealed that Larian Studios – Baldur’s Gate 3’s developer – is ‘done’ with the franchise and isn’t planning to release any DLC or expansions for the sensational game that was released in August 2023. Regardless, it remains one of the best games to drop in recent years and sat at the top of the charts for quite some time. It was recognised at the 20th BAFTA Games Awards as the Larian team stood up to accept a trophy in five categories:
- Best Game
- Music
- Narrative
- Performer in a Supporting Role
- EE Players’ Choice
It narrowly missed out on scooping the awards for Artistic Achievement, Multiplayer, and Performer in a Leading Role. Baldur’s Gate 3 shattered expectations when it was released last year, going on to sell more than 10 million copies in a dramatically short time.
Alan Wake 2 also had a share of the limelight at the BAFTA Games Awards, taking home wins in the Artistic Achievement and Audio Achievement categories. There were two wins allocated to Super Mario Bros. Wonder, too – Family and Multiplayer. There was a (potentially final) award for Cyberpunk 2077, which netted the Evolving Game award, and the Game Design award went to DAVE THE DIVER, one of the standout indie (but not indie) games from 2023.
